Welcome to Spicy Kerala. Imagining of typical Kerala cuisines?
hmm mouth watering. I can feel a bit of salt and sour and of course the chilly
in my mouth. But what to choose from a variety of Non vegetarian and vegetarian
dish? Excuse me vegetarians, I would
love to start with the non-veg food, that’s the speciality of Kerala cuisines.
For the ultimate spicy non vegetarian food including fish
curry and meat, I got to move on to
central part of Kerala, the best place I
choose as a lone traveller I prefer the toddy shops of coastal area, from Cochin to Alleppey. My starter would be steamed tapioca prepared with a bit of red
chilly and some add on spice leaves with fish curry, I mean red, spicy fish
curry. The taste is awesome. To soothe my taste buds I will have a glass of
toddy too. The dish is served in plantain leaf and you can really feel the flavour of the leaves too. I know you are imagining the dish served in front
of you.
In Kerala meat is unavoidable part of meal in some places
and communities, but better be careful, the meat served should be beef and not
cows meet, it tastes different. Varieties of meat and fish preparations are
available. You have to choose your food joints from a know person in the area.
Next after starter is the Kerala Special Meals, the same
served in plantain leaf with more than 5 varieties of curries and payasam
that’s sweet to end the meal. Curd, pickles, pappad are unavoidable part of the
Kerala special meal. Any side dish is a good combination for this Kerala meal.
Avoid non veg then this becomes a pure vegetarian meal. Kerala special meals
are served in most of the hotels in Kerala irrespective of their star rating.
Higher the stars, increased in the price and the varieties of dishes served.
But having it served in a plantain leaf, is always exquisite and amazing.
Crab and prawns are always in demand for keralites, the
varieties of dishes prepared with it is uncountable. From fried to gravy the
preparations ranges and tried in all the best ways possible.
But with out proper knowledge and help from a local person
it’s not very easy to find the best food joint for a normal traveller. Some toddy shops have family rooms and that
too very few in the city limits. On the outskirts don’t even think of visiting
toddy shops with family. Things will be different and unsafe.
So next time when you visit Kerala, don’t for get to ask for
Kappa (Tapioca) and fish curry.
Get ready for a full filled stomach.
Will be back with more post, till then .. Bye for now
