Alleppey Houseboats - Kerala Backwaters in India

Alappuzha, also known as Alleppey, is a city in Alappuzha District of Kerala,a state of southern India. Alleppey town is considered to be the oldest planned town in this region and the lighthouse built on the coast of the town is the first of its kind along the Arabian coast.

Alleppey is an important tourist destination in India. The most popular tourist attraction is the backwater cruise in houseboat. A houseboat cruise in these backwaters is a delightful experience.

Alleppey is also the access point for the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race, held on the Punnamada Lake.It is the most competitive and popular of the boat races in India.
Other attractions in Alappuzha are Alappuzha Beach, offering one of the most beautiful views of the Arabian Sea.
Alleppey Houseboats
Alleppey Houseboats are huge, slow-moving, exotic barges used for leisure trips. a houseboat is about 60 to 70 feet (18 to 21 m) long and about 15 feet (4.6 m) wide at the middle. The hull is made of wooden planks that are held together by ropes of coconut fiber; the usual wood is 'Anjili'. The roof is made of bamboo poles and palm leaves. The exterior of the boat is painted with protective coats of cashew nut oil.
House boat has bath attached bed rooms, kitchen, dining area and private front deck to capture the beauty of the back waters. The boat moves by an outboard engine of 25 HP (which does not make much noise), en route viewing villages to see coir making, local tea shops, paddy fields, temples, beaches etc. There will be three crew members in the boat for running the boat, cooking and serving the food.
Its one of a kind experience in Kerala and millions of tourists visit alleppy for a day cruise or night cruise in alleppey houseboat. There are around 8000 houseboats in Kerala.
